Statutory Boiler Inspections

It’s a legal requirement for steam boilers to be examined by a Competent Person (CP) in accordance with a Written Scheme of Examination (WSE), this generally requires an annual inspection / thorough and working examinations. In addition to this a non-destructive test (NDT) is required every 5 years. Dunphy is able to prepare any boiler for these assessments and put you in the best possible position to pass.

With almost 60 years’ worth of experience in the heat and steam generation sector, you won’t find a more knowledgeable, professional team elsewhere. Our engineers have been assisting businesses with statutory boiler inspections and NDT’s for many years and understand the importance of proper boiler maintenance. Get in touch to learn more.

What does this service involve?

The inspection process will vary slightly depending on the age and model of your boiler, but generally, it involves the following steps:

  • Initial boiler risk assessment
  • Boiler and fitting stripped down to allow inspection by Dunphy and Competent Person for the “out of service” examination
  • Returning the boiler to service and completing the “in service” examination with the Competent Person, verifying the correct function of the boiler protective devices
  • Providing quotes for repairs or further testing if any faults are found
  • Replacing boiler house cladding and lagging
What is an annual inspection?

A statutory inspection/thorough examination by the CP is required by law and is a process that ensures that critical machinery and infrastructure is well maintained to avoid detrimental accidents. It generally comprises:

  • An “out of service examination” where the boiler and its fittings are stripped down to allow close inspection by Dunphy and the CP.
  • An “in service” examination where the boiler is returned to service and the correct function of protective devices is verified. This is completed as soon as reasonably practicable after the out of service examination.

The protective devices that must be inspected and/or tested include:

  • Pressure gauge
  • Pressure controller
  • Safety relief valve
  • Pressure limit switch
  • Water level controls/limiters
  • Flame detection device

Steam boilers fall under this category and therefore require regular inspection to protect the safety of workers and site visitors. This is a mandatory requirement for any boiler that meets the Pressure Systems Statutory Regulation.
